There are four types of silk, that is well-known among the people of our country:

These four types of natural silk are responsible for the creation of other silk textiles. People create these silk textiles by hand or power loons.

Matka silk

"Rough handloom silk fabric" is the term that defines Matka silk. Matka comes from the thick yarn that comes from the silkworm. It results in some irregularities in the silk fabric. As they resemble tweed in texture, the irregularities of the silk fabric look unique and versatile. 

People can sew matka easily. They are thick fabric. So they are used in the making of suits, furnishings, and jackets. 

Many handlooms adjust the amount of yarn. So that they can create matka silk fabric with different textures and thicknesses.

The multivoltine silkworm called Antheraea Assamensis is responsible for the making of the fabric. The silkworms eat Som and Soalu plants, and the silk produced by them is well-known for its durability and glossy texture. 

The Golden color and the shine it has is one of the reasons behind its versatility. The glossiness of the fabric enhances with every wash. And it stays with you for a long time. This is the reason why muga silk fabric is considered one of the costliest silk in the world.

  • 'Muga Mekhla Chador', one of the traditional costumes of the Assamese women.

  • Muga silk saree is also popular.
  • The clothing industry uses this silk fabric to make kurta for the boys.
